Incorporated approximately three years ago, on 12th August, 2002, HCU Food Corporation Limited was formed when the Hindu Credit Union Co-operative Society Limited purchased the assets of Chase Foods Limited at Chase Village, Chaguanas. The company was established with the intention of giving small business entrepreneurs the opportunity to become involved in the cottage industry, focusing on the production and distribution of food throughout Trinidad and Tobago and possibly other parts of the Caribbean and the world. HCU Food Corporation Limited was originally intended as a collection and distribution centre where food producers could depend on guaranteed prices for the products they sold and where retail customers could expect to pay reasonable prices for the food they purchased.

The first products introduced by “HCU Food Corp” as it is now referred to, were the “Shakti”, “Heritage” and “Ohzone” lines of food and household products, all of which were obtained locally. The market for these products being limited, HCU Financial Limited, the management company for HCU Food Corporation Limited decided, in the year 2004, to purchase the assets of Govac Trading Limited and added the “Supreme” “Oilio”, “Ultra” and “Blue Star” brands to its list. These new products are imported but the local market is excellent. HCU Food Corp. has now relocated to the Govac building at 47 Chadee Lowhar Street, Cunupia and is in the process of further adding to its range of products.

In December, 2004 a bulk retail outlet known as Credit Union Buyers’ Club was opened at LP 62, Munroe Road, Cunupia for the purpose of retailing rather than just wholesaling HCU Food Corp.’s own product lines as well as additional lines from other local manufacturers.
The original aim of accommodating local food producers with guaranteed prices for the produce from their self-owned cottage industries still lives in the hearts of the founders and leaders of the HCU Co-operative Society Limited and will, no doubt, come to fruition in the near future.
